Job Description

Overview The State Highway Administration (SHA) Emergency Response Technician (ERT) is an entry‑level position within the CHART Program. The ERT performs incident management and traffic congestion management duties, provides guidance to Emergency Traffic Patrol (ETP) operators, and conducts traffic control at incident scenes. The ERT assists disabled motorists and reports real‑time traffic information to the Statewide Operations Center (SOC) and Traffic Operations Centers (TOC). The role may operate special towing equipment and is required to respond to and remove disabled vehicles or other objects that obstruct traffic flow on SHA roadways and facilities. Under supervision, the ERT takes appropriate action to resume normal traffic flow during incidents and maintains regular patrol routes to respond to routine incidents at designated locations. The ERT maintains regular communication with SOC and TOC personnel through in‑vehicle computer systems and radio transmissions. MDOT offers a generous and competitive benefits package. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: Education: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate. Experience: One (1) year of emergency highway operations work, including relocating or directing relocation of disabled vehicles, making minor repairs, or coordinating with emergency response departments (fire, law enforcement, EMS) and tow operators at crash scenes. Note: Candidates may substitute equivalent U.S. Armed Forces military service experience for civilian experience. Licenses & Certifications: Driver's license valid in Maryland. Additional Information SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees must complete agency training and certification programs to be eligible for permanent status in this classification. Position requires operation of commercial motor vehicles. Must possess a Class C Driver's License valid in Maryland. During the probationary period, must obtain and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) valid in Maryland, depending on equipment operated, and maintain a US DOT Medical Card (or MVA waivers) every two years. During the probationary period, certification as a light‑duty tow truck operator must be acquired. Consideration for employment may be based solely on the contents of your application.
